Thyroid disorders refer to a wide range of conditions that affect the thyroid gland, a small, butterfly-shaped organ located at the base of the neck that helps regulate growth, metabolism, and other bodily functions.
Some key things to know about thyroid disorders:
Hypothyroidism
- Occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold temperatures, and more. It is most often caused by Hashimoto's disease (an autoimmune disorder) but can also result from thyroid treatment or other causes.
Hyperthyroidism
- Happens when the thyroid gland is overactive and produces too much thyroid hormones. An overactive thyroid speeds up metabolism and can cause unintended weight loss, rapid heartbeat, nervousness, and other symptoms. Common causes are Graves' disease and thyroid nodules.
Thyroid nodules
- Abnormal growths or lumps in the thyroid. Most are non-cancerous, but around 5% may be cancerous, so evaluation is important. Those with nodules may have normal, low, or high thyroid hormone levels.
Thyroid cancer
- Uncommon but rates have risen in recent years. Symptoms may include a lump, trouble swallowing, voice changes. Types include papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic. Treatment varies by type and stage and usually involves surgery /- radioactive iodine treatment.
Thyroiditis
- Inflammation of the thyroid. Can cause thyroid function to fluctuate and symptoms to come and go. Hashimoto's disease mentioned above is the most common cause.
Treatment of thyroid disorders depends on the specific condition, its severity and cause. For many diseases,
thyroid hormone replacement medications can help restore normal thyroid function. Radioactive iodine or antithyroid medications may also be options. Those with nodules or cancer may need surgery. Ongoing monitoring of thyroid levels is also key.
If you suspect you may have a thyroid issue, schedule a visit with your doctor right away. They can check for symptoms, perform blood tests to evaluate thyroid hormone levels, and do an exam to feel for enlargement or nodules.
